History

MEDYFINOL is a traditional and regular meeting of the statistical and nonlinear physics community in Latin-America. The XIX Conference follows a series of meetings that took place in Valdivia, Chile (2016); Maceió, Brazil (2014); Santiago de Chile, Chile (2012); Punta del Este, Uruguay (2008); Mar del Plata, Argentina (2006); La Serena, Chile (2004); Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay (2002); Córdoba, Argentina (1999); Canela, Brazil (1997); Tucumán, Argentina (1996); San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina (1995); Montevideo, Uruguay (1994); Mar del Plata, Argentina (1993); Mar del Plata, Argentina (1991); Santiago de Chile, Chile (1990); Puerto Iguazú, Argentina (1989); Mar del Plata, Argentina (1988); Lujan, Argentina (1987), and Lujan, Argentina (1986).

Statistical and nonlinear physics are multidisciplinary research areas with many applications in biology, economy, sociology, engineering sciences, chemistry, etc. The purposes of the MEDYFINOL meetings are to keep updated the scientific community on the new developments and tendencies in the statistical mechanics and nonlinear dynamical fields, to incentive collaborative international science programs, and to identify and discuss the most relevant advances in the area.

The success of the MEDYFINOL meetings can be attributed to the presence of eminent speakers; the high quality contributed papers, as well as significant student participation.

MEDYFINOL 2016

The XIX edition (MEDYFINOL 2016), was held in Valdivia, Chile, from December 5 to 9.

MEDYFINOL 2014

The XVIII edition (MEDYFINOL 2014), was held in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, from 13 to 17 October 2014. It was co-organized by three Latin American institutions, the Department of Physics (Dr. Marcelo Lyra) and Laboratório de Computação Científica e Análisis Numérica (Dr. Alejandro Frery) both of Universidad Federal de Alagoas, Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil; the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina (Dr. Osvaldo A. Rosso ); and the Faculty of Engineering, Universidad de los Andes, Santiago, Chile (Dr. Orazio Descalzi).

It was very promising to see many people, from young students to well- recognized senior scientists, participating in the meeting (see congress poster and photo). The MEDYFINOL 2014 was attended by 97 participants from nine different countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Norway, Spain, Uruguay, USA, and Venezuela. In this edition 19 plenary talks, 48 invited talk and 34 posters divided in two sessions were presented.

MEDYFINOL 2012

The XVII edition (MEDYFINOL 2012), held in Santiago, Chile, from 3 to 7 December 2012. It was co-organized by three Latin American institutions, the Faculty of Engineering, University of Mar del Plata (Dr. Hilda A. Larrondo), the Faculty of Engineering, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (Dr. Osvaldo A. Rosso ); and the Faculty of Engineering, Universidad de los Andes, Chile (Dr. Orazio Descalzi).

The event involved more than 120 researchers and students from 17 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, India, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Spain, United States, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Venezuela; see poster of the meeting and the group photo of the participants. The meeting counted with 23 Plenary talks, 41 invited talks, 2 sections of posters where more than 40 papers were presented. A selection of papers presented at the conference was published as “Localized Structures in Physics and Chemistry” in The European Physics Journal – Special Topics 223 (2014).

MEDYFINOL 2008

The XVI edition (MEDYFINOL 2008) was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, from December 1 to December 5, 2008. It was hosted by three Latin-American scientific institutions: Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (Dr. Osvaldo A. Rosso); Physics Institute, Faculty of Sciences, University of the Republic, Uruguay (Dr. Cristina Masoller and Dr. Arturo Martí), and Faculty of Engineering, University of los Andes, Chile (Dr. Orazio Descalzi).

The conference was attended by more than 150 participants from 18 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Chile, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Switzerland, United States, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It was very promising to see so many people, from young students to well recognized senior scientists, participating in the meeting (see poster and photo).

The conference attracted very interesting presentations. There were about 40 invited talks, 30 contributed talks, and three poster sessions (more than 90 posters were presented). The corresponding proceedings were published as theme section, of the International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos (Volume 20, pages 195 – 418, 2010). Also a selection of works presented during the conference were published as “Topics on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and nonlinear physics”, Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society A (Vol. 367, 2009).

MEDYFINOL 2006
